Mr. Howerton is starting his first year as principal of Hartland Middle School at Ore Creek. He spent the previous eight years as the Principal of Lakes Elementary in Hartland, and before that was the assistant principal at Hartland Middle School at Ore Creek for seven years. He also taught for one year at Hartland High School, in addition to teaching middle school fifteen years at Ionia Middle School (west side of Michigan) to start his career. Mr. Howerton holds two degrees: a bachelor's degree in education from Michigan State University and a master's degree in educational leadership from Grand Valley State University. He also holds a teaching certificate as well as an administrative certificate, both issued through the State of Michigan.
Our HMS principal has been married to his wife Deana for fifteen years and has one son, Kalin, who is fourteen and currently in 9th grade at Hartland High School. Mr. Howerton enjoys reading, sports (especially golf), music, but most of all spending time with family and friends.
It is important to Mr. Howerton that our Ore Creek Family, consisting of staff, students, and parents, consistently work together as a team in order to provide the best education possible for our students in a safe and caring environment. Staff and students are continually learning and growing; teachers working hard to improve and enhance their skills as educators, and students learning to grow and develop academically, socially and emotionally. We believe in ALL of our students at HMS!

Assistant Principal - Chris Chanavier
I am excited to be a part of the Hartland Middle School this year. Previously, I’ve spent 7 years at Hartland High School as an Assistant Principal and Dean of Students. I also taught for 8 years at various levels throughout Hartland: elementary, middle school and high school. I had the opportunity to have a great post high school experience by attending The University of Iowa, earning my Bachelors of Science and a Minor in Counseling. I am also proud to have attended different colleges throughout Michigan earning my Masters Degree as well as my Administrative Certificate. My experience across all levels of learning has given me a broad perspective for our students. Hartland Middle School is the springboard to the High School where we focus on Reason, Respect and Responsibility working off of a great history of empathy, achievement, grit, linking, empowering and serving.
I grew up in Hartland attending Lakes, Farms and the Old High School. Being in Hartland is a huge part of my life and I could not see myself being anywhere else. I have an amazing family with my wife and three kids all attending Hartland Schools.
I am looking forward to a great year filled with learning and growing, preparing our students for the next chapter in their lives.
